Puppy Classes

We have puppy classes every Saturday morning at 10:00 am.  They will be running continously so that you can start whenever your puppy is ready.  Your puppy will have 6 classes in a row.  The cost for the 6 classes is $100.00 unless you start your puppy between the ages of 6 to 8 weeks, then your 6 classes are free.  The reason that we do not charge for the classes is because it is so important to socialize your puppy before 13 weeks of age.  It makes a huge difference in the life of the dog.  They can start up to 18 weeks in age.  Once your puppy finishes his 6 weeks of class, they can still come for more socialization at $15.00/class.  They can also move on to basic obedience classes.

Your puppy needs to be exposed to a wide variety of people before he is 12 weeks old.  Well-socialized puppies grow up to be wonderful companions, whereas antisocial dogs are difficult, time-consuming, and potentially dangerous.  Your puppy needs to learn to enjoy the company of all people and to enjoy being handled by all people, especially children and strangers.  As a general rule of thumb, your puppy needs to meet at least a hundred people before he is three months old.

Another developmental deadline is learning bite inhibition.  They need to learn that by 18 weeks.  Puppy class and doggy daycare are good places to learn that.  When they bite another puppies too hard and no one wants to play with them, they catch on fast!  Dog jaws are very powerful and if they don't learn to moderate their jaws, they can be dangerous as adults.

Puppy classes are geared toward socialization more than obedience training.  We get them use to different people, dogs, situations, and strange objects.  We will be using the AKC STAR program.  They will get to work on bite inhibition, house training and other puppy issues.

Before they come to class they need their first distemper combo vaccination, a bordetella vaccination and a fecal.

There are two great books by Ian Dunbar that you can download for free.  They are called Before You Get Your Puppy and After You Get Your Puppy Go.  The links are http://www.dogstardaily.com/files/BEFORE%20You%20Get%20Your%20Puppy.pdf and http://www.dogstardaily.com/files/AFTER%20You%20Get%20Your%20Puppy.pdf.

This is a great web site  http://www.dogstardaily.com  for a lot of dog information.  Ian Dunbar is one of the founders of APDT and has been doing research on dogs for many years.

Please call 540-439-PAWS (7297) or go to Forms page to get a registration form for your dog.  Mail the form with a check for $100.00 for the class and a copy of your dog’s vaccination record.
